Sept 28 Trip to Pingyao and Wu Tai Mountain
Pingyao is a famous historic cultural city of China and a world cultural heritage site, located in the center of Shanxi Province. People lived in the vicinity of Pingyao during the New Stone Age. Pingtao became a city and the seat of the county government in the Qin Dynasty (221-206 B.C.).
During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, some commercial groups that engaged in business nationwide were funded by some merchants in Pingyao. The Xiyucheng dye store on Xi Da Jie dealt in remittance and in 1823 became the first draft bank in China, dealing in bank drafts rather than in silver or gold money. Known as Rishengchang (Sunrise Prosperity), it was the cornerstone of modern Chinese banking.
The Courtyard of Wang Family is the master of the residential construction in Qing Dynasty with a total area of more than 250,000 square meters, owned by a Wang family and above. Part of it, 80,000 square meters with a total of 231 large and small courtyards, 2078 rooms, is opened to visitors presently. It is called “the Forbidden City of Shanxi”.
Wutai Mountain is one of the four major Buddhism mountains in China. Wutai Mountain, only 624 meters above sea level in the minimum place, the elevation of the highest point is up to 3061 meters, is the highest peak in North China.
